This 5-mile stretch of Middle Fork American River, plus the rugged upstream stretch in the Granite Chief Wilderness, are the only river-segments not affected by a dam upstream. This readily accessible stretch of river lies immediately above French Meadows Reservoir and is paralleled by the Mosquito Ridge #96 plus #51 Roads. Still it’s a long drive far above Foresthill—and for some a stomach turning ride. But, especially scenic. Still campers at the reservoir or Talbot and Ahart Campgrounds along the river find this stretch good for water play and fishing.

This far up the drainage the river is smallish and the abundant fishable trout reflect this in their size. Nice pansized Rainbow and Brookies can go from the creel to supper in minutes for campers, but are probably not worth the long drive just for only the fishing. Fishing holes are more pockets behind the numerous rocks, but the stretch is suitable for supervised fishing by kids. The tree-and-brush-lined river limits fly fishing but is readily waded to improve access for casting.

Smallish trout can provide lots of action for dedicated anglers, but best of all, it’s only minutes from several campgrounds.
